The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is pleased to offer the 2022 Virtual Brunch and Learn Educational Sessions, which are being facilitated by University of Maryland Extension in Garrett County.
To kick off this season, join us to learn more about the Freshwater Fisheries and Hatchery Program (FFHD), which manages a number of impoundments in Western Region I (Garrett and Allegany Counties). The largest and most popular of these impoundments is Deep Creek Lake in the heart of Garrett County. Not only is the lake and the surrounding area a hub of tourism, it also provides excellent year-round opportunities for anglers to pursue a variety of panfish and gamefish. One of the most popular gamefish species in Deep Creek Lake is the walleye, a species renowned for its excellent table fare. The walleye fishery in the lake is characterized by a high abundance, although the size structure is dominated by smaller fish. In 2021, FFHD staff began a comprehensive walleye stock assessment to gather data on age, growth, abundance and mortality (natural and harvest) in order to determine the best management strategy to improve the size structure of the fishery.
Matthew Sell Western Region I Manager for the Freshwater Fisheries Program with Department of Natural Resources will be the speaker for this first Brunch and Learn Series.
