Governor Larry Hogan signed a new Executive Order this morning which includes a Stay at Home Directive. The order goes into effect at 8 p.m. today.
“No Maryland resident should be leaving their home unless it is for an essential job, or for an essential reason such as obtaining food or medicine, seeking urgent medical attention, or for other necessary purposes,” the Governor said in a press conference in Annapolis this morning.
The Executive Order was issued in an attempt to reduce the threat to human health caused by transmission of the novel coronavirus in Maryland, and to protect and save lives.
"Even though Garrett County has not had a confirmed local transmission of the virus, Maryland's number continues to increase at an alarming rate,” said Garrett County Health Officer Bob Stephens. “The Governor's Order is meant to protect the health and safety of all Marylanders. Let's hope these measures help to protect our community."
The Governor went on to explain that outdoor exercise activities such as walking, hiking, running, or biking, are still allowed, but only if these activities are done in compliance with social distancing guidelines.
Travel is also permitted to provide care for a family member, friend, pet, or livestock.
Only essential businesses are permitted to remain open in the state, and Governor Hogan asked even them to limit staff interaction with customers and use telework for as many employees as practical. Employers are asked to give their employees documentation that they work for an essential business and they are essential staff.
Anyone who violates this, and other orders Governor Hogan issued concerning the virus will be guilty of a misdemeanor and face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
