March 2025 Lecture Series to Celebrate the Rich History and Ecology of Deep Creek Lake
The Deep Creek Lake Centennial Committee (DCL100) is excited to announce the upcoming lineup for its Lecture Series, which will be held every Thursday throughout March 2025. The series will feature a variety of experts, each presenting on a different aspect of Deep Creek Lake’s history, wildlife, and unique features. These educational lectures will take place at the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College, with topics ranging from local wildlife and fish species to the history of real estate around the lake.
“We’re thrilled to offer these lectures as part of the Deep Creek Lake Centennial celebration,” said DCL100 Chair, Chris Nichols. “This is an incredible opportunity for community members and visitors to learn more about the natural, historical, and cultural significance of Deep Creek Lake.”
The lecture series schedule is as follows:
March 6: "Wildlife and Natural Habitats of Deep Creek Lake"
Speaker: Chance Friend, Naturalist, Maryland Department of Natural Resources
Even though it was not intentionally planned, Deep Creek Lake has become home to a variety of wildlife. Chance Friend will highlight the diverse ecosystem and fascinating species that inhabit the area.March 13: "The Fish of Deep Creek Lake"
Speaker: Eric Null, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited
Join Eric Null as he explores the different fish species that call Deep Creek Lake home, sharing insights into their habitats, behaviors, and fishing techniques.March 20: "Operation of the Deep Creek Hydroelectric Station"
Speaker: Operations Manager, Brookfield Renewable
This lecture will delve into how the dam at Deep Creek Lake powers a hydroelectric plant, providing electricity to thousands of homes. Learn about how hydroelectric power works and the journey of the energy to the grid.March 27: "History of Real Estate at Deep Creek Lake"
Speaker: Karen Myers, Taylor Made Deep Creek Sales
Karen Myers will trace the evolution of property development around the lake, from Revolutionary War-era land grants to the lakefront properties we know today.
All lectures will be held at 6:00 PM at the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College, located at 687 Mosser Road, McHenry, MD. The use of the Performing Arts Center and AV support has been generously donated by Garrett College.
In addition to the engaging content, attendees will have the chance to collect a DCL100 Exploration Ticket and receive the stamp for March. They will also be entered into a raffle for a DCL100 swag pack. For those unable to attend in person, each lecture will be recorded and made available on YouTube.
The lectures are free and open to the public and no registration is required.
