2021 Residential Refuse Permits Available

The Garrett County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling announces that the 2021 Residential Refuse Permits are available for an annual $75 fee.

The 2020 permits will expire on December 31, 2020 and the 2021 permits will be valid from the date of purchase through the end of 2021.

The residential permits utilize a radio frequency identification system (RFID) that allows the permit to be scanned for validity at the landfill or each collection site location. Customers may renew the same permit for as long as they own the vehicle that it is originally placed on provided the annual fee is paid.

The RFID system makes renewing a permit easy.

To purchase or renew a 2021 Residential Refuse Permit:

  • During the COVID-19 crisis access to the courthouse and landfill office is by appointment only
  • The easiest and safest method of renewal is to make a renewal payment online or through the mail · To order a permit online, visit www.garrettcounty.org and click on “Trash Permits” under “Permits & Licenses
    • Permits purchased online will be mailed the next business day. There is no additional charge for using a credit card.
  • To purchase a permit by mail, complete the renewal form and mail it along with a check or money order to:
    • Garrett County Solid Waste, 3118 Oakland Sang Run Road, Oakland, MD 21550
  • Note: There may be significant delays to renew over the phone using a credit card and no receipt will be provided unless one is requested

To replace an RFID permit:

If a permit needs to be replaced due to trading a vehicle, loss of a windshield, or an accident, a replacement can be coordinated by a phone call or e-mail to the landfill office. The RFID technology allows a permit to be switched off electronically and customers do not need to return the old permit.

Important notes:

  • Do not remove a current permit decal from the windshield, the decal will be automatically reactivated upon renewal
  • All 2020 permits will be invalid on January 1st, 2021 and a per-bag fee will be assessed if the permit has not been renewed
  • Applications are not mailed out but are be available at all collection sites and online
  • Purchasing early will help customers avoid lines and delays at the end of the year

The Garrett County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling operates as an enterprise fund covering operating costs through fees rather than tax dollars and the county continues to be among the lowest priced jurisdictions in Maryland for waste disposal.

The average county permit holder can dispose of all household waste and occasional bulk items for less than $1.45 per week.

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the collection sites are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays from Noon - 6:00 p.m.

Note, the collection sites are closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays but the main landfill is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 3:30pm and Saturday from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
