Many things have changed in the last two weeks, making it difficult to keep track of the current COVID-19 requirements in Maryland.
Governor Larry Hogan’s Executive Order from June 10th removed many of the restrictions placed on businesses and gatherings.
However, the Governor’s Order kept in place the requirement for the use of face coverings in retail, food service, and personal care businesses for both staff and customers.
“Basically, although many restrictions have been eased, the requirement to wear masks and maintain social distancing is still in place,” said Garrett County Health Officer Bob Stephens. “These measures are necessary to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in the community as we begin to have more contact and events.”
As a follow-up to the Governor’s Order, the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) released a Social Gathering Limit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document that clarifies the Directive and Order signed by the Secretary of Health concerning the requirements for various activities and what restrictions apply.
There are still restrictions on such things as live performances and large mass gatherings because of the difficulty in preventing people (who are not household members) from sitting too close to each other to prevent unintended exposure to COVID-19.
Larger mass gatherings with spectators, particularly in concert venues and stadiums, are still not allowed at this time.
Outdoor sporting events were allowed to begin taking place on Friday, June 12th, at 5 p.m. while indoor sporting events may begin taking place on Friday, June 19th, at 5 p.m.
Spectators at youth sporting events are limited to parents and family of the participants. No spectators are allowed at any adult amateur or professional sporting events.
Weddings and funerals are allowed, with restrictions depending on the specific venue.
Social gatherings in private residences are not regulated and may be held. Social gatherings in public spaces that do not require a permit are also allowed.
MDH recommends continuing to take all precautions to avoid COVID-19 exposure, including the following:
- Encourage your guests to socially distance, wear facial coverings where possible, and practice hand hygiene and cough/sneeze hygiene.
- Ask your guests not to attend if they or a family member is ill with what could be COVID-19.
- Do not hold gatherings if anyone in the household is in isolation for suspected COVID-19 or because they were told they had exposure to COVID-19. To view the entire FAQ document prepared by MDH, go to bit.ly/social-gathering.
